Prof Mwelase Welile Llewellyn Mazamisa
Professor Mazamisa, a theologian and academic professor whose intellect and
humanitarianism affected everyone he met, was born in Korsten, Port Elizabeth in
1942, coming from a family actively involved in the church and the politics since
the late 1800s.
Raised by his grandfather in Kimberly, Professor Mazamisa wished to study Law,
but his grandfather convinced him to enroll at a Decoligny Theological seminary in
Mthatha in January 1961.
Having met political luminaries like Steve Biko in the ‘70s, he became a proponent
of black consciousness and black theology while continuing to study through
UNISA.
